One way of approaching health is to consider it as a social construct. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the association between self-perceived health status and mortality in the elderly. The study group consisted of 1131 elderly women who participated in a health survey in 1991. Outcome measures were self-reported perceived health status and actual mortality after 2 years, both at the time of the survey. The study showed that women who perceived themselves to be sick or very sick, were in general more frail in terms of health than those who reported feeling healthy. There was also a significant association between poor perceived health and mortality. Women who had poor health status at the time of the survey were found to be most at risk of dying in the next 2 years.Q:
